D-Group Basics

What is a Disciple?

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. Luke 9:23

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it:  Love your neighbor as yourself.  All the Law and Prophets hang on these two commandments.”  Matthew 22:36-40

Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”  Matthew 28:19-20

Based on the scriptures above, we believe a biblical disciple is a devoted follower of Jesus who is growing from the inside-out, who loves God, loves people, and makes more disciples.

HOW DO I DECIDE WHO I SHOULD DISCIPLE?

Disciple-Making always happens in the context of relationships. You should challenge people who you already know to be in your D-Group. As a guide, we suggest you look for people who are FAT:

FAITHFUL

Look for those who are faithful to what they know at this point. Not perfect, but faithful.

AVAILABLE

It’s not a good idea to ask someone whose schedule is already over-filled to be in your D-Group. Make sure they have some time and margin to be available.

TEACHABLE

Look for people who are willing to learn and follow the process.
